Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD) is the term to describe repetitive, obtrusive, thoughts which result in the individual experiencing unreasonable fears. Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD) is also accompanied by the individual undertaking  acts in response to fears generated by such obsessions.

A typical example of OCD is compulsive hand washing in as a result of an irrational fear of germs, bacteria and contamination. The individual with the disorder undertakes the compulsion and as a result feels better because of this, only for the compulsion to return shortly aftwerwards.

There are common obsessive compulsions seen in the UK and these include:

  • Excessive cleaning
  • Hoarding
  • Counting
  • Checking
  • Measuring
  • Trichotillomania (compulsive hair-pulling)
  • Compulsive skin picking
  • Worrying about death
  • Illness anxiety
  • Undesirable sexual thoughts
  • Fear of harming other people
